More About MedinTux
MedinTux is software that was initially developed by Dr. Roland Sevin for the French emergency services. However, its flexible architecture allows other medical fields to use the software. MedinTux is free and open source multi-platform software written in C++ and available for Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS and Windows. The software uses MySQL DB for patient data storage and is simple to use thanks to the Qt development toolkit. It uses the CeCILL v2 license, which is an adaptation of GPL to comply with French laws and regulations.
The Medin Tux project has now been underway for a decade, and the software is mature and stable, as one would expect for use in a health care environment, with an ongoing program of development and refinement to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of health care professionals. Training and seminars continue to be offered on a regular basis for users, with most of these events taking place in France.
MedinTux is a medical record management suite that was intended from the beginning to be adaptable to the unique needs of individual users. It is the end result of an ongoing project to help make everyday tasks easier for health care professionals, so that patients can benefit from improved care. The user interface has been refined and adapted for use by doctors and other users who may have little interest in learning a complex computer program. As a result, a physician using MedinTux can completely manage patients’ files and enter new data without the need for an assistant or secretary, which helps to make health care practice more efficient. Data provided by the project indicates that doctors using MedinTux software are able to handle 40 to 70 cases each day, with the doctor able to enter data in real time, and validate encodings as required by governmental health care regulations.
Additional features have continued to be added to MedinTux and the software continues to gain user functions. One of the recent additions that is particularly useful is the ability to easily synch with Google Calendar. This helps increase user efficiency and makes it simple to switch between different time period, schedule different doctors easily and effectively, and make patient appointments through a simple drag and drop using a mouse. It is also easy to integrate MedinTux with mobile platforms widely used by doctors and other health care professionals, including Android, Apple and BlackBerry devices. MedinTux also allows users to access it wherever they may be, through a web based interface. An additional feature that has proven very popular is the ability to auto-fill many standard PDF forms, particularly those forms that are required by the French health care system. Synoptux, which is also included in the MedinTux suite, allows for simple and reliable patient monitoring without loss of information.
MedinTux won the 2005 Trophees du Libre for the enterprise management category. Les Trophees du Libre was an international competition that was intended to promote unique and innovative software projects by generating media coverage for winners, as well as providing prizes.
