More about off-site backup
It should come as no surprise that your business’s data assets are amongst the most precious assets that your company has. And unlike a building or a piece of machinery, if your data is destroyed, it can never be replaced. Your employees, your customers, and other stakeholders depend on your business to take adequate measures to protect the safety, integrity and security of its business data.
The simple fact is that your company’s most critical assets reside within your servers, laptops, and desktop computers. But despite this, too many companies don’t take the proper precautions when it comes to backing up their data.
Of course, nearly all companies perform regular backups. Most companies today perform backups at least once a day, or on a continuous schedule.
What is alarming to see, however, is how many companies only maintain on-site copies of their data. This is especially dangerous because these backups are meant to protect the company in the event of a major disaster that takes out their data center. But if anything happens to this data center, the onsite backups will also be destroyed by these destructive events. That’s why it is important to make sure that all of your backups get taken off site.
At the very least, you should have one copy of your backups stored in an off-site facility that has appropriate security measures in place to prevent tampering, theft or destruction. A better practice would be to have redundant remote off-site copies of your backups in case one copy gets destroyed. And, you should also have a local copy in addition to these remote copies.
Of course, one of the reasons that so many companies don’t maintain adequate off-site and on-site backup copies is that it can add complexity to the to an already expensive and time-consuming backup process. This is where Storagepipe can help.
